The Last Analog Component
The technical work of writing code is increasingly what agents do. The bottleneck has moved to the human point of contact — getting truth out of a person and into the machine, then pulling accumulated knowledge back across the gap. You are the interface. The discipline of being a good one is real, specific, and scattered across five fields.
This is one engineer reading those fields the way he reads an unfamiliar codebase: distrust the documentation, find what's load-bearing, run the tests. A skill he lacks and needs — investigated in public.
The house rule is one move: a number, its source, and its limit, in the same breath. Every statistic travels with what it can't support. Vendor claims are named as vendor claims. When the evidence is one study, the text says one study. When it's five literatures converging, it says that too. This is not methodology dispensed from competence — it's an investigation, and the rigor is the point.
You Are the Interface
You are not the programmer anymore; you are the peripheral — the last analog component in a pipeline going digital around you. The new bottleneck is human intake, and the discipline of being good at it is scattered across five fields that have never been in the same room. The map. The other pieces are the territory.
Reading the Analog Signal
Everyone calls it people skills. The one study that partitioned the variance found likability was four percent of the result. You're not charming a signal out of someone — you're reading a noisy channel where the part that matters is the part the source can't put into words.
Write to Disk
The conversation is volatile memory. It starts decaying within hours, and what feeds the machine downstream isn't what was said — it's your fading reconstruction of it. The discipline is persisting it cleanly, and defensibly, before it corrupts.
No Stealth Mode
In 2015 the risk was visibly looking something up in front of the client. In 2026 the risk is not disclosing the recorder and the AI — and the tools built to hide them are the ones the law is moving against.
The Exocortex
The second brain you're picturing — wired in, whispering the right answer mid-meeting — is not what Karpathy proposed and not what the evidence supports. What he actually proposed is slower, and stranger, and better.
Thermal Limits
Say you run the interface well — read the signal, write to disk, pull from the archive, all of it disclosed. There's one finding left, and it decides whether you can do it again tomorrow: the component has a duty cycle.
